YARDS

2018.04.08 -- SNOW UPDATE

Last weekend, we got about nine inches of snow.  It's been melting off, slowly.  Of course, the current forecast is for up to another foot next weekend.

We have one patch of grass in the yard...

Otherwise, it's still covered in a foot-and-a-half of snow.  Here's Kody sitting on the almost five-foot plow pile at the end of the drive...

And Kelly's out in front of the garage boiling sap...

2017.10.04 -- BUTTERFLY COUNT

Well, it looks like the butterflies are done.  There are still some chrysalises hanging in the baskets, but I don't think it's warm enough for them to transform.

The final count was 171.  95 males and 76 females.

2017.09.17 -- DID YOU BUILD A DECK THIS WEEKEND?

'Cause I sure did...

The materials cost about a dollar per pound.  Behind it, you can see the newly-painted house.

Maybe we'll start raising robins rather than chickens.

2015.07.26 -- MONARCH CATERPILLAR

We have a patch of milkweed in the backyard...

I've checked it every few days looking for Monarch caterpillars.  Today, I found "frass" (caterpillar poop) on some of the leaves...

After a couple minutes, I finally found the caterpillar...

It was about as big as my pinky.

Rick, the furnace guy, is s'posed to be here Tuesday to run a pipe into the house to the new boiler, then finish hooking the boiler to the water lines.

2014.11.12 -- WINTER'S HERE

Monday / Tuesday we received about a foot of snow...

It's a bit hard to see, but the banks are already about two-foot tall...

The furnace guy is here (that's his van in the first picture) installing our new boiler...

It hangs on the wall and will supply both heat and hot water.  There's another box about the same size that hooks on below the boiler that holds an eighteen gallon tank of water which is kept hot.  Anything more than that gets heated on demand.

2014.10.31 -- HALLOWEEN TRICK

We got snow last night...

We had the traditional Wisconsin Easter dinner...  Poached-venison brats...

Actually, that was yesterday. I had already put up a few pictures yesterday and didn't want to add another, so I waited until today. We went to have dinner with Dave and Carol. They say "Hi" and "Happy Easter". Hope you had a good day.

2014.04.19 -- MORE SNOW

In other news, my peppers are starting to pop...

While working on the laundry today, I added my tomato seeds to the right half of the tray.

2014.04.14 -- FLYING BEAVER

For those of you who asked, this is a "flying beaver"...

It is a Pileated woodpecker.  It is the largest woodpecker in the US, up to 19 inches tall.  They can carve out holes in trees that are up to four feet tall, leaving piles of wood chips at base of the tree, as in the previous picture.
